Llynfi Valley Local History Society

The Society was founded in 1979 with the aim fostering an interest in local history and in Welsh history in general.

These aims are achieved through visits and discussions and through organising series of varied educational and entertaining talks by acknowledged authorities. Whilst the nature of the talks never loses sight of this  objective, presentations also cover a more global and far wider chronological scale from Wales in the Stone Age to Ancient Egypt, the Middle Ages, the Great War, and subject matter well into the the 20th century. The Society has a number of members researching local history, who act as a focal-point, for enquiries we receive from all over the world.

Membership currently stands at 70-80, with some members from the early days still involved, although the original President, Brinley Richards, and , more recently Dr Lynn Jones, two of the valley's most eminent historians have now passed away.

The Society meets at Maesteg library on the first Tuesday in the month, from October to April. An annual dinner and a summer excursion are also organised. We also publish booklets (see below) and a twice yearly Newsletter

Recently, the Society elected as President, Mr John Lyons, another of the valley’s leading historians. With the recent passing of the Revd. Robin Williams, Mr David Rogers is now the Chairman and Mr Neil Perry is the new Secretary. William Howells the outgoing Secretary is now the Society Archivist and also editor of the Newsletter.
